Registered Clinical Counsellor
Saskia Roland
ABOUT ME
My Pronouns are she/her. I have worked as a clinical counsellor since I was twenty one years old. Counselling has been my life's work, and I still find working with people brings me joy and satisfaction.
In 2017 I became ill, and was forced to significantly scale back my practice, and let go of my office space. My partner and I downsized to Princeton B.C., making space for me to take care of my health, and to recover from my illness.
During this quiet time of recovery, I have found healing in developing my creative practice. Feeding my soul through art, as well as yoga, walking and meditation.
I relocated from the U.K. to Canada in 2001. I have two grown children, a partner I love and have travelled extensively.
Now, having recovered my health, I am beginning a new chapter, and looking for new challenges. My partner and I have returned to Vancouver and I am excited to be well enough to return to a counselling practice. Being ill, while difficult, taught me many beautiful lessons, and I am so happy to be able to engage with the world and my practice again.
WORK EXPERIENCE
During my career I have worked in a number of different settings. I began working in hospital back in the UK. Later I worked for Family Services and EAP's here in Canada, and then, for many years, ran my own private practice.
I have provided counselling for adults, couples, children, parents and families.
At present I am working online with adults but hope in future to have therapy rooms to see people in person.
I am a registered Clinical Counsellor with an M.A. in psychotherapy and counselling.

THERAPY APPROACHES
In my practice I have found that attachment theory informs and explains much of what I do. Our childhood experiences form our internal roadmap, and sense of self. These things are what we use to orient ourselves in relationship to the world, and other people. Sometimes these maps need updating, and attachment theory provides us a framework to do this.
The existential approach to therapy is also a valuable tool in my experience and practice. Here, we look at a person's value systems, and what brings meaning to their
lives. The existential approach does not see people as sick, nor does it see change as a goal, rather the focus is on opening up space where the individual is helped to see things with clarity and decide for themselves how they want to go forward.
I also use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (C.B.T.). This is especially helpful in shorter term counselling situations, as it quickly provides tools that a person can use to change their thinking and behaviour.
